This presentation will consider the challenges, both old and new, and the opportunities for the ‘traditional’ universities in Scotland with regard to Gaelic, in particular departments that are involved in Gaelic teaching and research. These include (1) small staff numbers and limited resources, (2) a lack of prioritisation/strategic support from funding and development bodies and (3) the expansion of the scope of Gaelic in the university context, now taking in social research, the digital humanities and ICT projects.
